Biomass – Before and After Energy Innovations

When I first heard about the opportunity at Energy Innovations, I didn’t really know what biomass was. I thought it was some kind of renewable energy and being a wannabe eco warrior, I was excited by the prospect of working for a company that was doing something to help the environment.

As I researched biomass before the interview, I wondered how something that involved a) cutting down trees and b) burning them could possibly be good for the environment. As I continued with my research I discovered that biomass is much better for the environment than the fossil fuel alternatives for the following reasons:

  • Unlike fossil fuels, biomass is carbon neutral.
  • New trees are planted in the place of any that are chopped down.
  • Sometimes the fuel comes from waste products.
  • Where possible the fuel is sourced locally and therefore supports the local economy, as well as reducing the carbon footprint.

Now that I’ve been here for a few weeks, I’m enjoying learning about the fascinating world of biomass and how it can benefit not only the environment but also large industrial and commercial enterprises such as farms, poultry farms, manufacturing firms, schools, hotels, golf courses, glasshouses, country estates and many more. Such organisations can benefit from increases in productivity as well reduced energy bills and a high return on investment through schemes such the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCS).
